In addition to bedrooms, attics, cellars, closets and garages, amateur radio operators commonly install transceivers (transmitter/receiver) in vehicles. All installations have unique challenges to assure maximum performance with minimum problems. But the installation of radio equipment in cars and pickup trucks presents a special challenge.
One may presume that hooking up the red wire to the positive battery terminal and the black wire to the ground post is all that’s needed. Or, if you’re especially clever, maybe just powering things via the convenient cigarette lighter plug (if you have one) is the way to go. If so, then you would benefit from the Club’s yearly “Mobile Roundup” which gives prospective mobile operators the opportunity to learn from those who know the right way to do things.
Today’s event, held in the parking lot near Burger King along Kettleman Lane, demonstrated not only the “right” way to do things, but also the range of installations from simple to exotic. Among our experts were Steve (Lefty) K6CTQ , Mike (K6AAN), Mark (W6SXA) and Ron (N6GKJ).
