It was early morning, Saturday, June 27th, 2026 on a ranch in Lodi, CA when the Lodi Amateur Radio Club began staging this year’s Field Day exercise. Within minutes teams of people were erecting antennas and powering up radios of all description. At 11:00 am PST over 30,000 other federally licensed amateur radio operators across North America began to simulate an emergency communication response. Why? Because often during the period immediately after bad storms, volcano eruptions, severe floods, wildfires and earthquakes, amateur radio plays a vital role when other forms of communication (like cell phones) are off line.
Besides emergency response preparation, Field Day serves as an important part of public outreach. By day’s end we enjoyed the opportunity to meet many members of the community who were surprised to learn just how interesting and relevant the “old” Ham Radio hobby has become to young ones eager to learn a new science.
Some of those benefitting from amateur radio are blind. We invited “BANG” (Blind Amateur Net Group) to join us for Field Day this year. They actively support local blind and visually impaired individuals to qualify for the FCC license.
As the photos show below, we all had a great time. You’re invited to join us next June or at any time during the year during one of our monthly meetings.
